DR. SUVARIN

Dr. Suvarin

Dr. Suvarin was a doctor at the state psychiatric hospital near Leningrad, a facility which housed both psychiatric patients and political prisoners including Dimitri, Chessman, and Lopat. Sadistic by nature, Suvarin specialized in treating political prisoners, using punishment, chemical interrogation, and drugs to subdue them. He also delighted in tormenting the patients, threatening them with medication and taking away Chessman's chess board as a punishment.

When Pete Thorton and MacGyver portrayed doctor and patient to gain access to the hospital to rescue Russian dissident Alexander Karsov, Dr. Suvarin discovered that drugs had been stolen from a locked cabinet. He assumed that Pete and Dr. Natalya Petrovich had conspired together to sell the drugs on the black market, and he threatened to have them arrested.

He also grew suspicious of MacGyver's role in the plot and despite MacGyver's insistence that he was a KGB agent, Suvarin threatened to use chemical interrogation on all three of them. At that, Chessmaster could remain calm no longer, and he seized his forbidden chess board and hit Dr. Suvarin over the head with it, shattering the board. Then, as Lopat bound and gagged Suvarin, Chessmaster calmly retrieved his chess pieces, and he proceeded to play a game against the doctor, without the chess board, making and explaining the moves for both of them.
