LOPAT

Lopat was a patient in the state psychiatric hospital near Leningrad. There he was housed in Ward K with both psychiatric patients and political prisoners including Dimitri and Chessmaster. A large and intimidating presence, Lopat was generally nonverbal, but he would wander the ward making random comments such as "Better to eat flesh and drink blood."
MacGyver had been admitted to the hospital as part of his mission to rescue Russian dissident Alexander Karsov, and when he made his way to Ward Zero, Lopat followed him. As MacGyver searched for Karsov, Lopat restrained the hospital attendant by hanging him upside down by his toes over a doorway and by grabbing the two attendants who came to his rescue.
He again came to the aid of the other patients when Dr. Suvarin threatened the use of chemical interrogation and Chessmaster lost his composure and hit him over the head with his chessboard. As the other prisoners escaped, Lopat gagged Dr. Suvarin and bound him in a straitjacket, then seated him opposite Chessmaster for a one-sided game of chess.
